The foundation of an exceptional, high-performing team lies in strong relationships. Leaders who invest in understanding their team create a positive work environment.
How well do you know your team? Have you spent the time to understand their story? If someone asked your team members, how well does your leader know you? What do you think they would say?
Getting to really know your team is one of the most important responsibilities of a leader. What motivates them? What are their fears, their concerns, their aspirations? What keeps them up at night? It’s easy to stay on the surface and not get involved with just the cursory – “how’s it going?”
To build an effective team, you really need to know your people.
Your team needs to get to know you as well. Spend time getting to know your team. Take notes, follow up, be engaged. Not everyone is the same, and people will react differently – so treat them as individuals. Make sure to ask open-ended, thought-provoking questions to get the conversation started. Listen carefully, ask clarifying questions to learn more and be willing to share. Never forget that your team is not just like you…
Everyone is unique, and it is your job to understand how to relate to them. So, the next time you have a chance to meet with your team, ask thought-provoking questions. Learn who they are and get to know them to build a strong, lasting relationship. It is the foundation of an incredible, high performing team.
